Canon 5D vs Nikon D3
Posted by David Chin on August 29th, 2007 in Camera ComparisonsThis is a collection point for discussions, user reviews and tests comparing the Canon EOS 5D vs Nikon D3 digital SLR cameras.
Andrew Chiciak says: Quirks of the 5D that he hopes won’t be present in the D3 are inconsistent flash and metering, overly saturated reds on skin tones, sync outlet that misfires at times.
Horizontal banding in Canon 5D high ISO pictures: Paul Guy states that the D3’s high ISO performance would be considered better than the 5D if high ISO images do not exhibit horizontal banding, assuming all other noise characteristics remain the same.

I shot Canon 5D specifically. I’m curious if the Nikon D3 will have the same problem the 5D has with vignetting.
I notice (and its been noted by others) that when shooting with a zoom lens at its wides in combination with a low aperature, f/4 assuming its say a 24-105/4, there is vignetting. (This problem appears to go away when shooting say the same lens at f16) I’ve done extensive research and it appears its the same old issue that all previous incarnations of the FF chip have.
Light falling in the corners tends to fall off, thus creating shadow or vignetting. This is a common phenominum with all zoom lens or low quality lens ( I use only “L” lens, btw) even with film cameras. But apparently the FF CMOS sensor exaserbates the problem.
So long story short, does the D3 in cobination with nikon lens exhibit this problem or is the new nikon cmos sensor eliminate this problem?

Hi Dave, I wonder the same thing too, and we’ll no doubt see many, many corner vignetting and softness tests on the D3 once it goes on sale.
BTW, I visited your gallery, and really enjoyed the excellent photos there.
